What advice do you have for fellow students regarding internship/job searches?
“It sounds super cliché, but be yourself.” Elissa advised that companies are seeking individuals who are compatible with their current team. “It is important to be honest about your strengths and weaknesses, but don’t be afraid to tell a joke, give a complement or ask a question. They want to get to know who you are.”
What advice do you have for students seeking work experience in their field of study?
“Reaching out can go a long way. While there may not be the perfect opportunity now, getting your name in the door goes a long way. There may also be volunteer positions or other ways to get experience. Stay open minded to these unpaid experiences.”
Have you taken LAS 2030, the LAS Professional Career preparation Course? If so, how did it help you?
“Yes! Taking this course made asking for career help a lot easier. The LAS career services team wants you to get a super awesome job and want to help you get there.”
Have you used any resources provided by LAS Career Services? How was this service helpful?
“Meeting with the LAS Career services team was super helpful in every step of the process.” Elissa feels she gained valuable support in refining her resume, crafting effective outreach emails, making a strong first impression, following up appropriately, writing thoughtful thank-you notes, and preparing for interviews. “They were just as excited as I was about this opportunity and them having my back made a world of difference to my confidence as well.”
What are your plans after graduation?
“I am polishing off my graduate school application now (LAS Career Services is a great resource for this too).” Elissa is also exploring opportunities in museum education.
