What advice do you have for fellow students regarding internship/job searches?
“EMAIL {contacts you meet]! Renee encourages students to email contacts they’ve met right after the career fairs. “They [contacts] are busy people, and you may not be at the top of their radar.” Renee acknowledges that conversation about pay can be ‘super anxiety inducing,” but believes it’s best to be upfront early in the process. To help build stronger relationships, she also suggests students “share things about you that are outside of school or work.”
Have you taken LAS 2030, the LAS Professional Career preparation Course? If so, how did it help you?
“Yes!” Renee says. “At first, I was a little skeptical, because most people already have a resume or some background [of how to get a job]. But I learned a lot about adding onto my resume and what else I can include during interviews.” She also highlighted the value of meeting individually with her career advisor. “It was amazing getting into detail of where to go to follow along a path.”
Have you used any resources provided by LAS Career Services? How was this service helpful?
Renee recommends taking full advantage of career advising appointments and meeting with career advisors more than once if necessary. “This has helped me tremendously in deciding what career path I should follow.”
What other experiences have helped you learn and grow professionally, academically, and personally?
Renee advises students to be mindful of their limits and not “overfill their plates” as it can be overwhelming. “College can be hard enough trying to fill your resume with so many things.” Instead, she recommends focusing on quality over quantity, “as long as you get a good foundation, and have a few diverse extracurricular [activities]” you will be on the right track. Renee plans to pursue a graduate program in school and clinical counseling after graduating in 2026.
