What advice do you have for fellow students regarding internship/job searches?

“Prior to writing your application or your interview take time to understand the mission and the culture of the company you are trying to get a job for. This makes your application much stronger and your interview feel more personal and natural. Having research and questions about the company prepared can highlight your professionalism and your enthusiasm for the position.”

What advice do you have for students seeking work experience in their field of study?

“Research opportunities and apply well in advance before when you want to start. It may take months to get an offer. “

Did you attend any of the ISU career fairs? If yes, which career fairs did you attend? How did you prepare to speak with employers?

“Yes, I have attended the People to People Career Fair both years. I prepared to speak to employers by preparing and practicing an elevator pitch, and utilizing Cyhire to research and learn more about the company.”

How has the internship helped you prepare for your next career steps?

“Both of my roles, as an assistant preschool teacher and as an intern at Northfield Community Recreation have given me hands-on experience with real children in real environments. This is something you can’t learn simply from textbooks. I have gotten to practice observing behavior, communication with families and adjusting to children’s emotional needs in the moment. These positions have helped me to build patience, empathy and confidence with working with kids. These skills are all foundational for becoming a clinical child therapist.”

What are your plans after graduation?

“After graduation I plan to get my PhD in clinical psychology and work as a clinical child therapist.”

Have you taken or are you currently enrolled in LAS 2030, the LAS Professional Career Preparation course? If yes, how did this course help you?

“Yes. LAS 2030 has helped me greatly in growing myself and my network professionally. It has inspired me to find unique job positions, helped modify my resume and most importantly prepared me for interviews and the career fair.”

Have you used any resources provided by LAS Career Services? How was this service helpful to you?

“I have attended advising appointments. I attended an appointment to go over my resume before the career fair. I was able to make simple tweaks that I never would have known to make without the help from an LAS advisor. I was provided amazing guidance in polishing my resume, and I was able to hand out a resume that I was both confident with and proud of at the career fair.”
