Spring 2026 Internship

National Science Foundation Cyber Infrastructure Compass Fellowship Program

How did you find out about the internship? What did the process look like from applying, interviewing, etc.?

“I found out about the National Science Foundation Cyberinfrastructure Compass Fellowship through my research professor. She came across it and shared it with our team, and since it was new to all of us, it made the opportunity even more interesting to explore. The application process involved submitting my resume and answering a few questions, followed by an interview that focused on my interests and what drew me to research and cyberinfrastructure.”

What advice do you have for fellow students regarding internship/job searches?

Do your research on the role and the organization so you can speak clearly and ask thoughtful questions. Focus on how your experiences show your value, not just what you have done. Also, reach out to mentors or career services when you need guidance, it really helps.”

Did you attend any ISU Career Fairs? If yes, which fairs did you attend? How did you prepare to speak with employers?

“Yes, I attended the Business, Industry, and Technology Career Fair this fall. I prepared by researching companies, tailoring networking questions, and creating notes for my elevator speech, including who I am, what I do, and the value I bring. I also prepared follow-up emails to maintain connections after speaking with employers.”

What advice do you have for students seeking work experience in their field of study?

“Say yes to opportunities, even when you feel unsure or unprepared. Some of the best experiences come from putting yourself in unfamiliar or uncomfortable situations. Try different paths like research, fellowships, or leadership roles, and do not be afraid to explore. The more you put yourself out there, the more you learn about your strengths and weaknesses, helping you build confidence, and figure out what truly excites you.”

How has the internship helped you prepare for your next career steps?

“This fellowship has given me the opportunity to work on real-world projects while strengthening my software development and backend skills. I have also had the chance to engage with experts from major research facilities and learn how these complex systems operate. Through lectures, sessions, and guest speakers, I have been exposed to topics like cloud computing, machine learning, and software architecture. Overall, this experience is helping me grow both technically and professionally, especially in how I approach problem-solving and collaboration.”

What are  your plans after graduation?

“After graduation, I hope to start a career in software development where I can work on meaningful projects that solve real problems and make an impact. I’m also open to exploring graduate school to continue learning, grow my skills, and collaborate on exciting technology challenges with others who are passionate about creating solutions.”
