2024 Summer Internship
Summer 2024 Intern at Argonne National Laboratories (SULI – Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship) through the Department of Energy
How did you find out about the internship opportunity? What did the process look like from applying, interviewing, etc.?
“I had a professor tell me about the program.” Peter believes he progressed to the offer stage due to a few reasons, including getting to know a professor in his department who later referred him to the application. Peter encourages students to get to know their professors! “They are a great resource for developing a network of contacts and for getting letters of recommendation.”
What are Peter’s plans after graduation?
Peter plans to apply for M.S. or Ph.D. programs.
What advice do you have for students seeking work experience in their field of study?
“Gain research and lab experience early,” explains Peter. He was offered the SULI internship without previous research experience, but he says getting lab jobs early increases your chances of securing a job. Peter also recommends starting your application essays early, “don’t procrastinate,” and notes the importance of asking for letters of recommendation early and reviewing your cover letters and resumes with other people beforehand. “I used the resources offered on the LAS Career Services website and met with a Career Advisor to go over my resume and cover letter.”
How has the job helped you prepare for your next steps in your career
“It has been a huge help! I met people from all different areas in the organization. It was the ultimate networking opportunity.”
What other experiences have helped you learn and grow professionally, academically, and personally?
Peter shares that taking on leadership positions has significantly contributed to his personal growth and that employers place high value on applicants being able to take initiative. Peter is active in resident life as the president of the Friley residence hall, an elected job, and the treasurer for SCUM. “Getting those experiences is a big thing organizations look for in applicants.”
