Classroom to Careers: Career Fair Success – Sarah Flippen

Name: Sarah Flippen

Major: Psychology

Year: Freshman

Some say a recipe for success at the career fair doesn’t exist. But if one did exist, Sarah Flippen is definitely using it.

Sarah, a freshman majoring in Psychology, attended the People to People Career Fair this spring. Although she made sure to prepare ahead of time, the first time walking into a career fair can be daunting.

“When I walked into Scheman and saw all of the booths I felt my stomach twist into knots,” Sarah said. “I am currently seeking an opportunity to work with one of the organizations that were present at the career fair. Making a good first impression and keeping conversations going smoothly was something I was nervous about.”

She didn’t let that stop her though. Sarah wanted to make sure that each organization she interacted with knew that she had a good set of knowledge about their organizations. To do this, she knew preparation was key.

“I went through the list of potential employers a day or two before the fair and picked out a few that stood out to me. I then made notes on organizations specific questions and phrases to include when I was talking to the specific employer”

She also made sure her resume was polished by coming into Career Services. This preparation ultimately led to Sarah actually having fun at the career fair.

“The most enjoyable part for me was learning how to navigate the career fair and the confidence I felt in myself when I left knowing that I presented myself well and came prepared.”

Sarah’s preparation for the career fair was key to her confidence and success. Everyone has the opportunity to walk into a career fair with confidence and hopefully find some success!
