Classroom to Careers: LAS 203X – Setting Students Up for Success!

Name: Rachael Meehan

Major: Public Relations

Year: Junior

Hello, Cyclones! My name is Rachael and I am currently a junior at Iowa State majoring in Public Relations with minors in Business and Event Management.

When I made my decision to go to Iowa State, I grew excited thinking about my future success and where I would end up in the professional field. When I initially heard about LAS 203X, I was ecstatic! I had been waiting for a course like this since I began my adventure at ISU. Most college alumni I spoke with told me they wished Iowa State offered a course like this to prepare for their careers.

Since high school, my peers and students from surrounding schools knew me as the ‘social butterfly’. This continued into college, where it was easy for me to approach others and make some of my best friends! Although I am sociable, I have always had difficulties feeling confident while being interviewed or talking with employers in general. Because of this, I was nervous to take LAS 203X and practice these skills. I decided to push my pride to the side and enroll in the course anyways. While taking the course, my nerves were settled and instead swapped with confidence in both my interviewing abilities and myself in general.

Although LAS 203X isn’t a required course to graduate, it’s extremely beneficial for your overall success as a professional. It’s easy to say you don’t have time to take a course that isn’t required (while you lie in bed and binge-watch Netflix), but when was the last time you did something that will benefit your future self?

LAS 203X helped set me up for success by helping me land a summer internship with Textron Aviation as a Communications Associate Intern, which I found through CyHire (a tool I learned even more about in the class)… how will it set you up for success?

After you graduate, you may not have this opportunity again… I pushed my pride aside, will you?

TODAY is the day to take a step forward in your professional career preparation and register for LAS 203X!
