Classroom to Career: Internship Spotlight – Madesh Samanu

Name: Madesh Samanu

Major: Computer Science

Year: Junior

Internship Job Title: Data Research Analyst

Internship Employer: Kingland Systems

Madesh Samanu, junior in computer science, is spending his summer interning for Kingland Systems in Ames.

Kingland Systems is a software company that serves clients all over the globe in many different industries including, banking, retail, insurance and more.

Madesh is building relationships with his coworkers and learning firsthand what it’s like to work at Kingland and in the professional world.

“I’ve met a lot of cool people who are passionate about their work. My coworkers are great, they are always there to help you. Although things have changed because of COVID-19, we still meet often on Microsoft Teams and Webex.”

Madesh took advantage of the resources LAS Career Services offers to prepare for his internship. He took LAS 203X and had his application materials reviewed before applying for his internship with Kingland.

“I visited career services often to get advice on my resume and cover letter. They also gave wonderful advice on interview tips. Last semester I took the LAS 203X class which helps in the career search and gives you the tools to get a job.”

One of the biggest pieces of advice that Madesh can give is to go to career fairs. Madesh landed this position after going to the spring career fairs. He had a friend that previously worked for Kingland and suggested he talk to one of their representatives during the spring career fairs. After talking to the company, he decided to apply and ended up getting the position.

“Go to Career fair and build networks, this is the cardinal rule to get a job and/or internship. Talk to the company representatives at the career fair, they want to get to know you. I felt like I was talking to a friend while I was talking to the representatives from Kingland.”
